Alan Raki Raki

My first race was in 2006 in Invercargill and we are looking forward to some quality time on the snow with the dogs.

Race Experience:

12 years racing sled dogs both dryland and snow.

Alice Perry

I was privileged in 2014 to be able to race Laurie Gudsell’s dog Ashka and Colin and Anthea Whitley’s dog Cheyenne up at the Snow Farm. This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and last year, I wanted to do it again. Without a sled, I signed up last year to give it a go on ski’s and Diesel and I learnt to skijor two weeks before the race.

Diesel and I are really excited to give this stage race a go and will be recruiting his ‘brother’ Kojak and his friend Moo (Moose) to join the racing squad. We are really looking forward to our winter in the snow!

Race Experince:

Raced dryland for several years. Skijored at the snow dog festival last year and competing again this year. Member of skidogs NZ.

Blake Potter

15 yrs old and seems to spend his time training dads dogs. Looking forward to hopefully doing more heats than him.

Race Experience:

1 – 4 dogs on dryland and snow. Also up to 10 dogs in training at home. Have raced in NZ and Australia

Colin Whitley

I have owned, (or maybe that should read, been owned by) Siberian Huskies for 15 years and have been running them for 14 years. And I still love running and spending time with the dogs as much as ever. They get me out of bed and keep me active particularly through the winter months. They have taken me on many adventures, and led me to meet some amazing and fantastic people, and travel to some beautiful places. Life always feels like a battle to balance work, other aspects of life and spending time running and being with the dogs. Work always seems to dominate too much time, that I would rather be spening with the dogs.

Race Experience:

I have been dryland racing for 14years and have raced on the snow since 2010 every year except 2017. Running everything from single dog through to 6dog dryland and 2 dog to 5 dogs on snow.

Daryn Chalmers

It all started about 8-9 years ago when I met whom I assumed to be a nice normal person with a couple of huskies, before I knew what was happening I was up at 5am in the middle of winter loading gear in the back of our truck to go racing with my dog, a Rottweiler of all things. Now we are neck deep in dogs and run a large team of misfits and rescues from various organisations.

Race Experience:

Dry land Sprint – single dog to 6 dog (would run 8 or 10 but none of the clubs offer it)
Snow Sprint – 2 (hard work) to 6 dog (still hard work)
Real dog classic 25km – 8 dog
midnight madness 42km – 6 dog(most memorable experience)
3D 24 km – 6 dog

Sponsors:

Inukshuk – professional dog food

Ebony Powell

I’m Ebony Powell from Queensland, Australia. I’m 14 years old and have been sled dog racing since 2014. In 2016, I won the Junior National title and raced interstate at Canberra. In 2017, I raced my first snow race at Falls Creek followed by Dinner Plain. I have attended Curt and Fleur’s bootcamp twice and gained a lot of knowledge about racing and bigger teams. I would like to thank Curt and Fleur for this amazing opportunity to race a longer distance and for the loan of their dogs.

Race Experience:

1 and 2 dog scooter (day and night)
2 dog snow (day and night)

Georgie Galloway

I have a team of working farm dogs that also dog sled in their spare time. The dogs and I have only been in the sport for a few years so are always keen to learn and looking for new challenges to see what can be achieved/enjoyed. For me, that is the draw to sledding, the different activities that can be accomplished.

Race Experience:

Sprint dryland racing in South Island for last 2years and have completed 15km dryland and 25km dryland nz long distance race in the last 2yrs.

Ilona Turnbull

Ilona got her first sibe Manya in 1996, followed by D’Artagnan in 1999, with him she got involved in sleddog sports in 2002. She kept a low profile until 4 years ago when she began entering scooter races with Kya & Rogue. She has now done numerous sprint races & 2 Midnight Madness events. Now running 5-7 dogs she loves the distance races, being out on the trail with just her dogs. Her Border Collie lead dog testament of her innate patience. She is proud to be running the strangest looking team!

Race Experience:

Midnight Madness 30km 2015
Midnight Madness Qualifier 15km 2016
Various Sprint Races in Scooter and Rig since 2002

Jake Faulkner

14 years old went on my first run when I was 4 I am running 2 dogs because dad has the other 4 just got 2 pups from Ineke, Falcon & Ash
Race Experience:
1-2 dogs dry land and snow, Real dog classic 13km 4 dog

Justin Faulkner

Justin Faulkner aged 50 something and an unfortunate member of the hundy club that i am trying to get out of. We currently have six sibes that we race, all of them rescued, they’re not the fastest team but their life now is so much better and they have taught me so much about Sibes, working with packs, training / conditioning and the knowledge we have gained we will be putting into the two new pups we have that Jake will be racing next season. So looking forward to the snow this year.

Kate Smith

I’ve been running with dogs for 10 years. It brings me such happiness to go skiing with my dogs in the mountains.

Race Experience:

Various NZ dry land races 2009-2018
Wanaka sled dog festival 2009-2011,2014
Otago distance race 2016,2017

Larry Nichvolodov

An old guy getting hauled around Dunedin on his push-bike with his 4 Siberian Huskies: Novaya, Kazak, Syenya and Kaleenka. Been running Ski Dogs New Zealand.

Race Experience:

Skijoring since 2006. 11 WSDF races. World Championships: 2011 Oslo Norway, 2013 Fairbanks Alaska, 2014 Kandersteg Switzerland.

Paula Rowe

I got my first malamute (Silver ) in 2012 and fell in love. Odin joined the family in August 2014 , and I haven’t looked back. Aside from running the dogs on Dry land, I partake in a number of activities most notably, in obedience. This is my first season down working with my dogs in the the snow, down this part of the country, and I am privileged to be learning from a great team down here . The Cardrona Valley Stage Race will be my first (and hopefully not last) snow race.

Race Experience:

Dry Land: 2013 – 2016 various North Island Meets competing in freight classes.

Sarah Wilson

I have been skl-joring for the last 4 winter seasons, firstly borrowing other people’s dogs and now with my own team. Bradey and Kahu are Siberian Huskies. They are twins and full of energy! We love getting up to the snow when we can and the rest of the time we go bike-joring near our home in Canterbury. We are also keen adventurers and love to get out exploring and doing multi-day missions into the wilds.

Race Experience:

Competed in ski-joring events for 2 winters. Bike-joring and scooter events in the lowlands for the last 4 years.

Steve Potter

50yrs old and looking forward to running our whole kennel as a team at this event in conjunction with my son Blake.

Suvi Mattila

We got our first huskies 7 years ago and they also led us to the world of sleddog sports. I moved to NZ about 10 years ago from Finland so snow is not a new element to me as such – I did lots of cross country skiing as a kid and used to even ski to school! The furry family has since grown into 4 huskies (one a cross breed) and 2 x GSDs. I enjoy doing a variety of different activities with our dogs and I’m really looking forward to a new challenge on the snow!

Race Experience:

– 6 years – dryland sprint 1-4 dogs plus Canicross
– 25k Distance Race in 2017
– First snow race in 2017 (sled & skijor)
